Beans, Cheese, Canvas n Sweat
I got my copy of the newly released, ten year anniversary deluxe 2 disc edition of Rated R (Rated Rx) by Queens of the Stone Age today. Ten years... can't believe it... It took me back to when I was living in Edgware and totally fixated with MTV2 (M2 as it was then...) just waiting for a look at 'The Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret' promo video, which I'd seen with the TV muted whilst I was on the phone and couldn't wait to hear what it sounded like. That was my first exposure to Queens of the Stone Age, but from that day I've followed avidly snapping up every bootleg I can find.
The August Bank Holiday in 2000 saw me pack up a tent in my little Fiat and head to the Reading Festival where it seemed as though everyone and their dog was listening to Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park and everyone was looking for Rob... I never found out who Rob was...
A couple of days of sweaty canvas laden nights, Heinz beans with cheese and sandwiches made with green tomato ketchup... What made that short weekend worth it was the appearance of QotSA on stage, including a naked and extremely drunk Nick Oliveri...
So today when I peeled the cellophane from my new purchase, I was thrilled to find that the second disc on the Deluxe Edition of 'R' had tracks recorded from the set, and they sound as awesome now as they did back then...
But I didn’t eat carrots?
After a lengthy trip, highlighted by an awesome night at the Jazz Cafe watching SOIL and 'PIMP' Sessions, I'm back in Sweden and almost immediately back to my old ways.
Friday night I nipped to the store with all good intentions of bagging some decent food, but opted for steaks and the ingredients for a carbonara...
Saturday was spent calling Huey down the porcelain telephone for either over indulgence or a major migraine - (as I both over indulged and woke up with a migraine it was hard to tell...).
Sunday was spent catching up on most of the weekends sporting events (Schumacher is still a twat and proved it big time on Sunday...), and today I pottered around the apartment telling myself I was keeping busy.
I did venture out into the world at one point to pick up some post and look at TV's I couldn't afford and then it was back to the love of my lyfe... yes, the internet and Japanese movies...
Pimpin’
I was just sifting through Last.fm's recommendations for live music and came across SOIL and 'PIMP' SESSIONS playing at the Jazz Cafe in Camden on the 22nd. Too smoov to pass up...
Västward Bound
A heart stopping moment as I checked the Ryan Air website today. At 10.30 it stated that the runway at Stansted was closed due to snow. This quickly changed after 10 minutes or so and normal service was quickly resumed.
My last day in Blighty always seems to be spattered with drama and hassle, all of it quite unnecessary as I've now Sussex how to get to the airport with the minimum of stress for everyone by setting a good hour advance on a suggested time of departure. What this does is give lots of time at the airport to grab some food, have a mooch and get through security with plenty of time to walk to the gate. But there is always something that comes up to drop the preverbial spanner into the works. Today it wasn't just the snow... Lack of heat in Dad's MPV meant that we has to pile into Mum's
Still Snowing
The snow has been pretty persistent and we've had a good 40cm of snow. This compared to the metre or so and -20 degree temperatures in Sweden is laughable - but it ha taken it's toll on pretty much everything here. Stansted has reopened but flights are either cancelled or severley delayed.
On the bright side, it does look pretty...
Snowed in?
Well today has seen the most snowfall in the UK for over 15 years. And that's as I write this - by the morning there will probably be a lot more snow and news of utter mayhem blighting the country. And whilst all this makes me snigger at how positively pathetic it all is, I'm also a little bit more than concerned that my flight this coming Thursday might be cancelled. I have just seen that flights into Luton are being diverted to France... WTF! Of all places to be diverted to, I'm sure that somewhere within the British Isles would have been more favourable!
Running From Snow
Of all the days for it to start snowing...
I spend the day finishing up various 'To Do' lists and wander around trying to remember that one thing I've forgotten. It's when I'm queueing for a cheeseburger in town that I remember -cold hard cash. Not a major disaster as the plastic works just as well but it's stll a bit annoying having the spondoolicks sitting there wanting to be spent and me in another time zone.
The weather is bitter. It's -5 in town and snowing - so much for the forcasted 'Green Christmas' for the Stockholm area.
The Christmas lights are rockin' the city big time. Unfortunately the iPhone leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to nighttime photography, so no pictures I'm afraid.
The flight is due for around 21:00, fingers twisted that there isn't a delay like last time...
Sunday Sucks
I was really looking forward to today's games... First, Arsenal take on Chelski and then Real travel to Barca.
I think I'll take up watching angling instead...
Here’s Mud In Your Eye
The Big Smoke Calls... With empty rucksack on back I head into town and venture up the steps into the light of Tottenham Court Road. London Underground have demolished the corner of Charing X road and Oxford St. and the resulting crap is being swirled around in mini twisters all around the street. As my head appears from the darkest reaches of the subway my face in blasted with all sorts of debris from the building site.
My left eye cops most of it, and somehow some grit manages to get under my contact lens and produces the most excruciating pain I've felt, ever. I head straight for the nearest opticians for assistance ...
After asking for a basin to wash my hands and a bit of liquid to was my lens and reseat it, the response I receive is, "We have this fluid, Bausch and Lomb, fifteen pounds..." I reassert that I only require a bit of help to wash the lens and put it back in but this gets the response along the lines of, "Try Boots..." If I could remember the name of the place I'd warn you against going...
I get to the British Museum vicinity a bit early so decide to head into Gosh! Comics to have a browse. I end up picking up some Manga and a few Marvel titles that I failed to get when ordering my monthly bundle.
One of the Manga titles is Tekkon Kinkreet - Black & White, All In One - The Will Eisner Award Winner from Taiyo Matsumoto.
I also grab a volume of Death Note and the first in the Old Boy Manga too. Unfortunately with a dodgy eye I can't read them very well and will have to wait until later tonight when I get home.
Craig arrives at around 2:30 and we head into the museum to check out some of the exhibits.
We kick off at the Asian level where the Buddha Statues from all over the Far East sit, then head onwards and upwards into Korea, Chinese Pottery and finally the Japanese Exhibit which I love. A few pieces of Wood Block Art by Hiroshige are on display there and it doesn't matter how many times I see them, I'm still in awe of the detail and craftsmanship.
We take a quick look at the Elgin Marble exhibits from the Parthenon, which I've never seen in all the visits I've made to the Museum.
James arrives just after 5 and we grab a quick coffee before we intend to hit more exhibits. However, it's at this precise moment that he remembers that he's forgotten to complete some work that has to be done before midnight, and he has to leave us pretty much as soon as he arrives.
So Craig and I head into the Hoshino Yukinobu Manga exhibit, showcasing the Professor Munakata series as the character explores the British Museum. It wasn't as big as I'd hoped but it was still nice to see original Manga art on display.
We head to Chinatown, meeting Binna en route at TCR Station and as we walk along Gerrard St. looking for an authentic restaurant, Craig is asked by a tourist to take a picture of them. I'm then approached by an Italian tourist and her companion who ask I wouldn't mind having my picture taken with her?!?!? I put it down to the fact that I've been winking at everyone since I arrived in the City, laughed and said "What the hell".
We end up in Wardour St. at Hung's. And I have to say this is probably one of the best Chinese Restaurants I've been to in Chinatown, if not the UK. One look in the window tells you that it's going to be good, as every table seems to be taken by a Chinese person. We head in, are ushered to the top floor and given a nice large table, a beer and a menu with such delights as boiled cow tendon and hot pot with pig intestines. I have a hot pot which, although I did think about the pig intestine version - I ended up settling for the aubergine in chilli. Craig had the hot put with tofu and as both were vegetarian we were able to share. This was washed down with a large pot of tea and was bloody brilliant.
Afterwards we head to a small cafe that is the only place that I've found (outside of the sorely missed Oriental City) that sells Bubble Tea.
The Candy Cafe is just off Gerrard St. in Macclesfield St. on a 1st floor reached to from a doorway beside a cake shop.
I have a milk tea with bubble and a set milk jelly, Craig has a banana milk with bubble and a portion of dry dumplings with coconut, and Binna joins me in a milk tea.
All-in-all a quite excellent meal and dessert, shame I could only taste it and not see what it looked like...
